LET IT LIE

by

Do not hasten to tidy
the fallen foliage in your heart.

As with leaves settled over the
early winter ground,
You may feel you need
to gather up the messy feelings,
The drifting thoughts.

But if you snub the dictates of seasonal clean-up,
And let it lie,
You may find that precious creatures
Make their home there in the dark,
Preparing to birth new joys come Spring.
And those old, discarded leaves
Will slowly, gently, come apart,
Becoming a rich soil, from which will grow
Who-knows-what astonishing new varieties of life.

Put down the rake that tries to make
Order and sense of it all.
Let the nature of your heart
Do its own slow, magnificent work.
